Why it matters
【Key points】
On Oct 21 Walmart announced three things for AI shopping agents, presented by CEO John Furner at the Masters of Scale summit. (1) Walmart Agent Gateway is an MCP interface that lets approved agents search Walmart and Sam's Club inventory and buy for users. Beta for developers first; it can surface usual items without sharing purchase history. (2) Agent Profiles launch next month. Each agent gets its own sub-profile; users approve every order or set a cap ($50/$100/$200). (3) Terms for AI agents: approval by default, no access to card data or payment methods, minimum necessary data, normal returns if an agent misbehaves, and violators are blocked. Same prices as for people; no Walmart+ needed.

【Our read】
1. Personal agents (Muse, dots, Claude Duet) now drive real shopping traffic. For retailers the question has moved from whether to let agents in to the rules for letting them in.
2. Amazon blocks third-party agents and pushes its own Buy for Me. Walmart is going the other way, adding an interface, an identity layer and rules. The design mirrors payment-network agent tokens (own identity, limits, revocable, no card numbers).
3. MCP is moving into mass-market retail checkout, and Walmart may become the reference design. Its returns backstop and approve-by-default rules lower the risk for early users. Walmart also keeps the customer data and shares only what a task needs.
4. Caveats: the Gateway is a developer beta, Profiles arrive next month, and Walmart hasn't said how agents get approved.
