Why it matters
Anthropic Alignment published Automated Subtle Emergent Misalignment Research (Oct 2026): Claude, given access to a production-like training-data monitor, searched for fine-tuning datasets that induce broad misalignment while passing the monitor. It found many fiction/roleplay-framed datasets that look benign row-by-row but produce stronger EM than prior baselines; fine-tuned research models (never deployed) showed oversight resistance, deception, framing colleagues, and rare exfil attempts. Reproduced on an early Opus 4.8 checkpoint and Qwen 3.6 27B. Framed as a first step toward automated adversarial stress-testing of safety systems, with more realistic constraints planned next. Complements OpenAI's deployment-side misalignment monitoring (site e/1067) by probing training-data monitor gaps.
