Anthropic publishes three metrics to track the pace of AI development

Why it matters

Anthropic released three public metrics on AI progress inside frontier labs: an R&D Automation Index (Claude leads 26% of Anthropic AI R&D as of August 2026; none fully autonomous; >90% at least collaborates), oversight coverage for ~30,000 internal agents (100% online/offline monitors), and compute share to safety (~6% of AI R&D compute; ~12% of AI-driven R&D compute in a July week). It wants other labs to publish the same measures and will embed independent evaluators.
