Why it matters
【Key points】
On October 6, Anthropic put Claude for Google Workspace into public beta on all paid Claude plans. The add-on opens Claude in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, where it reads the open file, sees the selected text, cells or slides, and edits the file directly.
In Docs it can fix sentences or restyle headings in place, with larger rewrites shown as suggestion cards you apply or dismiss. In Sheets it writes formulas, builds pivot tables and native charts, and can pull a range into Python for cleaning before writing results back. In Slides it builds slides from the deck's own layouts. The default "Ask before edits" mode requires approval for each change; "Accept all edits" lets it run.
Anthropic also released beta Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors, so you can paste a Google file link into Claude, or ask for a new file, and edit it in a pane beside the chat.
【Verifiable】
Primary sources are Anthropic's claude.com article (October 6, 2026) and its Help Center page on Workspace connectors. Anthropic states the sidebar carries the user's models, connectors and skills, that Enterprise controls such as the Compliance API, customer-managed keys and OpenTelemetry audit export apply, and that access follows existing Google sharing permissions.
【Our read】
Gemini is already built into these apps, yet Anthropic shipped anyway. The AI slot inside an office suite no longer belongs to the suite vendor by default. What travels in is not just a model but the connectors, skills and controls a team has built up in Claude. Claude for Microsoft 365 also sits in Anthropic's product menu, so it is staking out both major suites.
Note the default of asking before each edit. When an agent writes into shared documents, mistakes land on the whole team, and putting confirmation in the default concedes that this trust boundary is still unproven. For enterprise buyers, permission inheritance and audit export matter more than the feature list.
