Why it matters

【Key points】

At the White House OSTP's "Science: A New Golden Age" summit on Oct 8, the administration announced more than $6B in science initiatives. The most AI-relevant: 11 companies pledged $2.4B in "SI for science tools and compute credits" to the Genesis Mission, the federal AI-for-science program spanning 15+ agencies. NVIDIA $1B, AMD $500M, OpenAI $200M, Anthropic and Google $150M each, AMP and Emerald AI $100M each, and AWS, Armada, Crusoe and Micron $50M each.

Anthropic said its $150M runs over three years as Claude, Claude Code and API credits for several hundred Genesis projects, plus work with NASA, NIH, NSF and others on fusion and quantum, and onboarding support. The summit also announced a Southeast computing consortium of 14+ universities in 10 states, a $1B Georgia research-compute investment, $100M+ from NSF and DOE for AI instruments and autonomous labs, and a $100M Genesis PhD fellowship.

【Our read】

1. The $2.4B is credits, not cash. Apart from Anthropic, the fact sheet gives no timelines, recipients or valuation basis. Credits priced at list rates are not grants; treat the total as a ceiling.

2. Chip vendors give the most. NVIDIA and AMD account for $1.5B, over 60%; the three model labs total $500M. Federal science's AI layer is being built on vendor stacks, and scientists who get credits also get locked into ecosystems.

3. "Super intelligence" now runs through US science policy, alongside this week's Super Intelligence Force and virtual-cell data push: AI as national research infrastructure, supplied by companies and allocated by government. Watch how credits reach projects, and who owns the results and data.
