Why it matters

【Key points】

Anthropic has signed its first data-centre lease in Canada. On October 16, EverWind announced more than C$10bn in planned investment in a data-centre campus at Point Tupper, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, plus new wind farms. Per CBC, Anthropic will lease the first phase for at least 20 years; Anthropic said the site "will power Claude models and serve growing demand from Canadian and global customers." Reuters and Bloomberg call it Anthropic's first Canadian data-centre deal.

Phase 1 is 95 MW, due late 2027; phase 2 adds 325 MW in 2028, for 420 MW total (Nova Scotia's generating capacity is about 3,000 MW). EverWind is raising C$8bn for the campus and C$2bn for four wind farms, which won't be ready for phase 1; the grid supplies it at first, and phase 2 needs grid studies and approvals. EverWind and Anthropic say they will pay for grid upgrades. Jacob Glick, Anthropic's head of public policy in Canada: "Canadians use Claude at some of the highest rates in the world."

【Our read】

1. EverWind's release names only "a leading frontier AI developer"; Anthropic's statement and wire reports name Anthropic. Lease value is undisclosed.

2. It extends Anthropic's compute footprint beyond the US, pitched as keeping infrastructure close to Canadian users.

3. As with Microsoft's Nscale exit, power is the variable: phase 1 leans on the existing grid and phase 2 depends on approvals. First capacity arrives only in late 2027.
