Why it matters

【Key points】

Confidential-computing company OPAQUE Systems announced on Oct 13 that its team is "joining Anthropic to carry OPAQUE's work forward." Its homepage now says OPAQUE Systems is winding down operations.

According to The Information, Anthropic said it is licensing OPAQUE's technology and hiring some of its staff, including CEO Aaron Fulkerson and CTO Rishabh Poddar. Financial terms, the scope of the license and the number of people joining were not disclosed. OPAQUE was not acquired outright, and some employees are looking for other roles.

OPAQUE grew out of research at UC Berkeley's RISELab, and its co-founders include Databricks co-founder Ion Stoica and cryptographer Raluca Ada Popa. It built "confidential AI": hardware-enforced isolation so companies can run AI on sensitive data, plus cryptographic evidence of what ran, where and under which policies. Its open-source projects under AgenTrust (Weight Custody Manifest, Confidential MCP, TRACE and others) stay available under their existing licenses.

【Our read】

1. This is another license-and-hire deal for Anthropic: it gets the technology and core team without buying the company.

2. Confidential computing and verifiable execution are the first questions regulated customers such as banks and hospitals ask before giving models sensitive data. The deal strengthens the trust infrastructure behind Anthropic's enterprise business.

3. Anthropic has not said when or how the technology will reach Claude products. For now, only the hires and the license are confirmed.
