Why it matters

【Key points】

Alongside EmbeddingGemma 2 on Oct 6, Google launched AI Edge Foresight, a free, experimental Mac app for meeting notes. It taps system audio and the mic, so it works with Meet, Zoom or in-person meetings, expands your shorthand bullets into full notes from the live transcript, and answers questions raised in the meeting.

All inference is local: the 740M-parameter EmbeddingGemma 2 indexes transcripts, notes, PDFs, Office files and Markdown in one vector space, and Gemma 4 (size undisclosed) writes and chats. Google says data "never leaves your computer" and it works offline. Apple Silicon only; it can index local folders and Google Drive.

After TechCrunch and The Verge covered it on Oct 8, X saw about 114 posts in 24 hours across several languages, still several an hour on Oct 9.

【Our read】

1. Not a big launch, but meeting transcription, local retrieval and generation now fit on a laptop. Cloud-based subscription note-takers like Granola face a free, offline rival from a major lab.

2. It looks more like a showcase for Gemma on-device than a real Google product line: Mac only, no Android or Pixel, hosted on the developer site. Google's offline dictation app from April never went mainstream.

3. "Data never leaves your computer" is Google's word for now: the code is closed, the Gemma 4 size is unstated, and Drive syncing is not explained. Watch for third-party network tests and whether it reaches Workspace or Android.
