2026-10-12 to 2026-10-18 digest

129 items on this page: 114 with their own page, 15 short.

A digest puts the short items from one day or one week on a single page. Opened alone, those briefs are often a headline and a sentence, which is a poor fit for a standalone article. Items that meet the importance threshold keep their own pages and are listed here by title.

Google researchers open-source Harness², which lets an agent rewrite its own prompts, tools and memory without touching model weights: one step lifts GLM-5 and Gemini 3.5 Flash by up to 11.5 points on WorkBuddy-Bench

Paper

【Key points】

Google Cloud AI Research and Northwestern University posted "Harness^2: Recursive Agent Harnessing for an Open World" on arXiv (2610.14224, October 9) and released the code under Apache 2.0 on GitHub. A "harness" is everything around the model: system prompt, tool descriptions, memory, skills, subagents and scripts. Harness² keeps model weights fixed and lets an agent rewrite that layer on unseen tasks.

Task level: run the original harness as a reference, propose cross-domain and domain-specific edits, run each on the same task, and compose a new harness from the behavioral differences, with no ground-truth answer needed. Harnessing level: store adopted harnesses and evidence-backed lessons in a library for later tasks.

The paper reports that one step improves GLM-5 and Gemini 3.5 Flash over their base harnesses by up to 11.5 points on WorkBuddy-Bench, 4.5 on JobBench and 11.8 percentage points on LAB's partial pass rate, with more gains from more iterations. The code supports OpenCode and Codex executors and has a local demo that needs no API key. The repo has about 3,100 stars; X discussion picked up over the past two days.

【Verifiable】

GitHub: https://github.com/google-research/harness2

arXiv: https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.14224

【Our read】

1. A research paper with open code, not a Google product launch; online since October 9, so this is a catch-up entry.

2. Gains are self-reported and scored by an LLM judge (WorkBuddy setup requires a Gemini judge); no independent replication yet.

3. Like DeepSeek's open-source dsh and the Apple/EPFL single-session agent study, it shifts competition toward self-adjusting harnesses. The cost: each task runs several extra times, multiplying compute and API spend.

Replit CEO Amjad Masad says Replit is 'no longer working with Anthropic', citing cost and that OpenAI's Sol/Astra beat Claude on its benchmarks; an insider says the partnership is still in place

Industry

【Key points】

Per TechCrunch, Replit co-founder and CEO Amjad Masad said onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt on Oct 16 that Replit is "no longer working with Anthropic," citing cost, partnership and performance: "I think ChatGPT is better now," with OpenAI's Sol and Astra consistently ahead on Replit's internal and public benchmarks for building vibe-coded apps from scratch. Replit announced an OpenAI partnership in August; Masad said Replit had been one of Anthropic's top five customers.

A person familiar with the partnership told TechCrunch it is still in place, and a late-September Replit blog post cites Claude Fable 5 and 5.1 in production.

【Verifiable】

TechCrunch: https://techcrunch.com/2026/10/16/replit-is-no-longer-working-with-anthropic-ceo-says/

【Our read】

1. This is an onstage remark; neither company has issued a statement, and what "no longer working" means (dropping Claude, ending the commercial deal, or switching defaults) is unclear.

2. The signal matters: a top coding platform publicly calling OpenAI cheaper and better, as Anthropic prepares for an IPO, is a public challenge to its strength in coding.

3. Watch whether Claude models actually leave Replit and whether Anthropic responds.

OpenMOSS open-sources MOSS-Image, a 5B DiT text-to-image model (Base + SFT, Apache 2.0) built for Chinese/English text rendering and JSON layout control

Model release

【Key points】

On Oct 16 the OpenMOSS team open-sourced MOSS-Image, a text-to-image model released as MOSS-Image-Base and MOSS-Image-SFT (fine-tuned on curated data), with code and weights under Apache 2.0 on Hugging Face and ModelScope, plus a demo and technical report. The backbone is a 5B-parameter diffusion transformer (DiT) focused on Chinese/English text rendering and layout control: text and object placement can be specified via natural language, tag sequences, or JSON layouts, suiting posters and infographics. Prompts can run up to 4K tokens and the base model is designed for easy fine-tuning. The team notes it was trained on heterogeneous "alternative GPU platforms" and ships a native ComfyUI plugin.

【Verifiable】

GitHub: https://github.com/OpenMOSS/MOSS-Image

Hugging Face: https://huggingface.co/OpenMOSS-Team/MOSS-Image-SFT

Technical report: https://github.com/OpenMOSS/MOSS-Image/blob/main/paper/MOSS_Image_Technical_Report.pdf

Launch post: https://x.com/MosiAI_Official/status/2111094509845332037

【Our read】

1. A mid-sized open image model whose edge is Chinese text rendering and controllable layout rather than raw image quality; 5B params and Apache 2.0 make it practical for bilingual design work.

2. Training on "alternative GPU platforms" is notable, but the README does not name the chips or scale; check the technical report before drawing conclusions.

3. No unified third-party comparison against Qwen-Image or FLUX yet; within a day the community had ComfyUI workflows, LoRAs and an MLX port.

Anthropic makes Claude Code Review generally available for Team and Enterprise: ~3x faster reviews, Quick/Standard/Deep levels per repo, $10K credits for eligible Enterprise orgs

Product

【Key points】

On October 15 Anthropic moved Claude Code's Code Review out of research preview (opened March 9) to general availability on Claude Team and Enterprise. Via the Claude GitHub App, several agents review each PR in parallel, verify findings to cut false positives, and post an overview plus inline comments, focused by default on correctness bugs.

At GA: most reviews take about a third of the preview time (~20 min down to 6–10). Findings state the problem, its trigger and the fix. Admins set an org default and per-repo Quick, Standard or Deep levels; deeper costs more.

Billing is token-based through usage credits, separate from plan usage, with no flat per-review price (preview reviews averaged ~$15–25). New repos default to reviewing every push, which multiplies cost; monthly caps are available. Eligible Enterprise orgs can claim at least $10,000 in credits by January 15, 2027, expiring 30 days after claim.

Limits: GitHub only; not available with Zero Data Retention or HIPAA configuration, not covered by the BAA, no CMEK yet.

Announcement: https://claude.com/resources/articles/code-review-is-now-generally-available

Docs: https://code.claude.com/docs/en/code-review , https://code.claude.com/docs/en/code-review-costs

@ClaudeDevs: https://x.com/ClaudeDevs/status/2110866210573386065

【Our read】

1. GA adds tiers more than new capability: teams can save Deep for critical code and run Quick on routine repos.

2. Cost remains the hurdle: no per-review cap and every-push by default; the $10K credit lowers the bar for Enterprise pilots. Pilot a few repos and check average cost per review first.

3. "3x faster" and "more of the bugs that matter" are Anthropic's own claims, with no public benchmark. The ZDR/HIPAA exclusion keeps out some regulated customers.

OpenAI and Meta tell the US federal evidence-rules committee that no reliable way to detect AI images will exist, as judges weigh a deepfake rule

Policy

【Key points】

Reuters reports that the US Judicial Conference's Advisory Committee on Evidence Rules met in Boston on October 15 with an expert panel on deepfakes. OpenAI policy counsel Shira Anderson said AI images keep improving and she does not believe a scientific method will exist to detect them; each company uses its own watermarking, so there is no universal way to check them all, and they will never be fully reliable. Meta product director Devin Norder said output from recent models cannot be told apart by humans and costs little time or money to make.

Chair Judge Jesse Furman noted deepfakes have rarely surfaced in real cases: in a March Federal Judicial Center survey, 15 of 931 responding judges had seen evidence challenged as a deepfake.

【Verifiable】

Agenda book (panelists, draft rules): https://www.uscourts.gov/sites/default/files/document/2026-10-evidence-rules-agenda-book.pdf

Meeting notice: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2026/06/15/2026-11982/advisory-committee-on-evidence-rules-meeting-of-the-judicial-conference

【Our read】

1. Two drafts are pending. Rule 901(c): once an opponent shows enough to support a deepfake finding, the proponent must show the item is more likely than not authentic. Rule 707 would hold AI output offered without an expert to expert reliability standards; it was withdrawn after public comment for revision. Neither is final.

2. Model makers telling judges detection won't be reliable undercuts relying on detectors, shifting weight to provenance, metadata and witnesses.

3. These are representatives' views, not formal company positions, and rules take years to take effect.

Cloudflare and OpenAI pilot: network signals from ~1% of Cloudflare's traffic helped OpenAI's search crawler find and index hundreds of millions of new pages

Industry

【Key points】

On October 15 Cloudflare shared early results from a pilot with OpenAI that began in July: signals from Cloudflare's network help OpenAI's search crawler find new pages, and OpenAI independently decides what to index and how to rank it. Using a cohort of about 1% of Cloudflare's network, the pilot let OpenAI discover and index hundreds of millions of previously unknown pages for ChatGPT search.

【Verifiable】

Cloudflare blog: https://blog.cloudflare.com/cloudflare-openai-discovery-agentic-web/

Methods described: filter out nonexistent URLs, catch-all redirects and duplicates before a crawler fetches them; use change signals to decide when a page is worth revisiting; test flags for single compromised pages (such as a planted fake login form) without penalising the whole domain. Cloudflare says the work uses web metadata, not page content, and is not for model training; a signal does not grant permission to access a page, and site owners' choices still apply. Next: better page selection, faster change signals, and measuring outcomes after discovery.

【Our read】

1. AI search is bottlenecked on discovery as much as on models. A CDN knows which pages really exist and when they change, which works like a live sitemap for crawlers.

2. Cloudflare has pushed default blocking of AI crawlers and pay-per-crawl; now it is also a matchmaker for OpenAI. That widens its role from gatekeeper to broker, with leverage over both site owners and AI companies.

3. The post doesn't say whether these signals are exclusive to OpenAI, or whether sites in the cohort opted in one by one. If exclusive, it is a structural index-coverage edge for ChatGPT search that rival AI search firms and publishers should watch.

153 apps including WeChat, Taobao, DeepSeek and Kimi opt out as ByteDance's Doubao phone assistant opens screen automation under its SAEP protocol

Industry

【Key points】

On Oct 14 ByteDance's Doubao phone assistant ended the 30-day notice period for its Screen Automation Execution Protocol (SAEP) and will gradually let its agent operate third-party app screens. Apps that opted out won't be operated. Developers can still opt out anytime (reply within 3 business days), either by integrating SAEP to set rules per app, page and intent, or by form or email. The list updates every Wednesday. SAEP was published Sept 14 with the consumer launch.

Per National Business Daily, the first opt-out list had 151 apps, including Pinduoduo, Kimi, Xiaohongshu, DeepSeek and ICBC, plus 23 Alibaba apps (Taobao, Qwen, Alipay) and 65 Tencent apps (WeChat, QQ). Per Southern Metropolis Daily, a same-day update added Kuaishou, Meituan and EZVIZ apps, bringing the total to 153. Alibaba and Tencent make up 88 (about 57.5%). Banks and the three state carriers are on it. JD is not, and Baidu listed only Baidu Maps.

【Our read】

1. This is China's first public robots.txt-style opt-out list for GUI agents, with operation allowed by default. Next to JPMorgan barring outside agents (e/855), it shows two models: the agent platform draws the line, or the target app closes the door.

2. Alibaba and Tencent run their own assistants (Qwen, Yuanbao), so the opt-outs are partly a fight over the user's entry point, not only about safety.

3. SAEP is Doubao's own protocol, not a standard, and only Doubao enforces it. The 151/153 figures are media counts; the official page is authoritative.

Anthropic opens Singapore office and signs MOU with Singapore's digital ministry on AI safety, model evaluation and incident response

Policy

【Key points】

On Oct 14 Anthropic opened a Singapore office, its fifth in Asia-Pacific, and signed an MOU with Singapore's Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI). Permanent Secretary Chng Kai Fong and co-founder Ben Mann signed it during Singapore International Cyber Week, witnessed by Minister Josephine Teo. It covers AI safety, security and model evaluation; research on AI adoption and its impact; and responsible adoption in the public and private sectors. Anthropic says it will hold technical exchanges with Singapore's AI safety, security and assurance institutions on model evaluation, testing standards and incident response, share research and data with the government, and advise as Singapore writes its AI rules.

Anthropic also says Singapore ranks 2nd of 121 countries in per-capita Claude.ai usage, more than 1,500 GovTech engineers use Claude Code, the Cyber Security Agency is exploring Claude for cyber defense, and DBS, GIC, Grab and Sea are customers.

Official X post: https://x.com/AnthropicAI/status/2110289695888511368

【Our read】

1. The substance is the evaluation, testing-standards and incident-response clause. Lab–government evaluation ties have centered on the US and UK; this adds an Asian node. But an MOU is non-binding and says nothing about pre-release access, so its weight depends on concrete evaluation work that follows.

2. Singapore is courting several labs at once: the same day Google DeepMind announced an on-device scam detector built with GovTech. Acting as both regulator-partner and big customer is a playbook other mid-sized countries may copy.

3. Usage rankings and customer figures are Anthropic's own and not independently verified.

Physical Intelligence opens its π robot foundation models through a Pi API beta: upload robot data, fine-tune on its cloud, and control robots via hosted inference

Product

【Key points】

Physical Intelligence (π) launched a Pi API beta on Oct 13, opening its latest π robot foundation models to outside teams. Teams upload demonstration data, fine-tune on compute π manages, and control their robots through a hosted inference gateway. π says the API will track its newest models, and the current one fine-tunes with less data.

Partners shown include Actor, whose autonomous wheel loader loads a dump truck with no operator at a commercial site in Utah, and early-access firms such as Almond, Chef Robotics and Formic Robotics. After four days on the API, Almond had its dual-arm Axol robot deburring parts for its own assembly. Most uses, from Japan to Switzerland to the US, ran on cloud inference, and some hit network connectivity problems. Access is by application.

Chelsea Finn: https://x.com/chelseabfinn/status/2110125641819668636

【Our read】

1. This is the first time π offers its models as cloud fine-tuning plus hosted inference. π had open-sourced π0 and π0.5 weights via openpi, but running your own training and serving stack is hard. The API leaves robot makers to handle data and hardware, a model/application split like the one in language models.

2. π says the more its models are used, the more it learns where they fail. The API is also a data flywheel for training the next general model.

3. Cloud inference has limits for physical robots, and π notes connectivity problems itself. Whether latency-sensitive, safety-critical uses accept cloud control, and when on-premises deployment arrives, are the beta's open questions.

Alibaba's Qwen launches N1 and N1 Pro AI glasses and Bose-tuned AI earbuds, adding iris-verified Alipay payments and voice task delegation for its personal agent

Product

【Key points】

On Oct 13 Alibaba's Qwen launched three AI wearables, the N1 and N1 Pro AI glasses and an AI clip-on earbud made with Bose, on sale the same day on Taobao, Tmall, JD and Douyin. After subsidies, the N1 starts at 2,218 yuan, the N1 Pro at 2,600 yuan and the earbuds at 1,099 yuan.

The N1 line has a 50MP camera for first-person capture, always-on environmental sensing, translation, meeting notes and voice-driven tasks. The N1 Pro adds heart-rate, blood-oxygen and skin-temperature monitoring, eye-tracking input and iris verification: start Alipay's look-to-pay, look at the merchant's QR code and nod to pay. The earbuds offer translation in 89 languages, AI note-taking and voice task delegation, including background jobs and scheduled ones such as a 9 a.m. industry briefing.

Qwen VP Song Gang called AI wearables "the extension of Qwen into the physical world." StepFun launched its STEPX Neo agent phone the same day (e/842).

Guangzhou Daily: https://news.dayoo.com/finance/202610/13/171077_55012400.htm

【Our read】

1. Chinese model makers are shifting from parameter counts to entry points. StepFun's phone and Qwen's wearables both move agents out of the chat box to act for people; Qwen's edge is the Taobao and Alipay services behind it that can actually complete a task.

2. Iris payment closes the last step of agent commerce, which used to require pulling out a phone. The hard part is Alipay's risk controls and regulatory sign-off, not the glasses.

3. Background and scheduled tasks show the work happens in the cloud Qwen app; the devices are portable input and output. Their value depends on how often the agent finishes tasks, and buyers should ask how always-on camera and vitals data are stored and used.

Google Play lets anyone install apps vibe-coded in AI Studio on their own phone without a developer account, and brings Ask Play comparisons and Play into Gemini

Product

【Key points】

On Oct 13 Google posted a Google Play update (by Sam Bright, VP and GM of Google Play) with three AI-related items.

Personal apps: Android apps vibe-coded in Google AI Studio can now be installed wirelessly through Play and run on your own device. They stay private and separate from the public catalog, need only a standard Google account and no developer account, and roll out today in select markets including the US for users 18+. Sharing with a close circle of friends and family comes in the coming months; publishing publicly means graduating to a developer account and the same Trust & Safety reviews as professional developers.

AI discovery: Ask Play can now generate side-by-side app comparisons with key differences and user sentiment, and "Play in Gemini" brings Play apps, games and developer content into Gemini chats, rolling out to all Gemini users soon. A new Game Finder recommends games from a "Gamer DNA" profile.

Sameer Samat's announcement post drew ~139k views; related X posts ran ~290 in 24 hours.

Android Developers Blog: https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2026/10/new-tools-for-discovery-and-engagement.html

【Our read】

1. The bottleneck for AI-built apps is getting them onto a phone, not writing them. Play now becomes a distribution channel for personal software, with AI Studio as the front door.

2. Personal apps skip review while only their maker uses them. The coming friends-and-family tier sits between private use and public release, and Google has not said how review will cover it.

3. With Ask Play comparisons and Play content inside Gemini, more app discovery will run through model recommendations rather than store search rankings, so listing text and user reviews will shape how models recommend an app.

JPMorgan bars outside AI agents from operating customer accounts: Dimon warns of "rogue agents" as the bank blocks credential-sharing logins and keeps agents to read-only data

Industry

【Key points】

On its Q3 earnings call on Oct 13, JPMorgan Chase said it will not let outside AI agents operate retail customer accounts. CEO Jamie Dimon: "We're not going to allow just any … outside agent to come in inside the company, because it's just too risky for clients and for JPMorgan," warning of "rogue agents" that "could be thousands." He said the bank uses agents internally and will build customer-facing ones.

CFO Jeremy Barnum said some money-moving agent services rely on customers sharing banking credentials, which Chase has long opposed; "to the extent that we're able to block those, we are blocking them," and if an agent given a customer's credentials does something unwanted, "that's going to be on them." A spokeswoman told CNBC that read-only data such as balances can still flow via providers like Plaid, but agents cannot move money or pay bills, with no timeline for direct access.

American Banker: https://www.americanbanker.com/news/jpmorgan-warns-of-risks-to-consumers-who-rely-on-ai-agents

【Our read】

1. The largest US bank has drawn a public line on agents managing people's money. Personal agents pitch moving idle cash to higher-yield accounts, which threatens cheap deposits, so security and deposit competition are both in play.

2. What is blocked is credential-based login, not agents as such. The way forward is a scoped, revocable, auditable agent-access standard, much as open banking replaced screen scraping; whoever defines it controls the gateway to agentic finance.

3. "If you hand over credentials, it's on you" matters more to users than the ban itself. Until rules catch up, the risk of letting general agents touch bank accounts sits with the customer. Whether other big banks follow is the next signal.

Google DeepMind and Singapore's GovTech build an on-device Gemma scam detector that flags manipulative chats without sending messages to the cloud

Product

【Key points】

On Oct 14 Google DeepMind said it built an on-device scam detection model with Singapore's GovTech under their National AI Partnership, shown at Singapore International Cyber Week 2026. Scams are over half of Singapore's reported crimes, with more than S$4 billion lost since 2019; conversational social-engineering scams make up as much as 80% of losses.

A lightweight Gemma model was fine-tuned on local scam conversations (impersonated agencies, banks, local figures, regional schemes). A low-power classifier screens inbound messages, then the fine-tuned Gemma reviews a longer slice of the chat to confirm or dismiss the alert, and a warning appears on the phone before money or credentials change hands. Chat data never leaves the device. Fine-tuning ran in GovTech's own GCP environment on anonymised scam-report data with no citizen PII.

@GoogleDeepMind post: https://x.com/GoogleDeepMind/status/2110190101707858039

【Our read】

1. End-to-end encryption blocks server-side scanning, so anti-fraud and privacy have long pulled against each other. Moving the judgement onto the phone is one of the few approaches that serves both, and the two-stage design shows how to keep it cheap on battery.

2. There are no accuracy or false-positive figures, no launch date, no named apps, and no word on access for other platforms. For now it is a showcase and partnership signal; impact depends on deployment data.

3. Small open-weight models fine-tuned on local data are becoming the standard recipe for government AI projects. What matters most is who controls the fine-tuning data and the distribution channel.

Harness Learning paper: a 4B model trained to rewrite an agent's harness code beats its 35B teacher on average across 21 unseen reasoning tasks

Paper

【Key points】

On Sept 28, Alvin Zhang, Ruslan Salakhutdinov, Daniel Khashabi, Yuda Song, Andrea Zanette and co-authors posted "Harness Learning Enables Generalizable Test-Time Adaptation" (arXiv 2609.35738). It treats an agent as model plus harness, the code that organizes model calls, tools and information flow, and trains a proposer model with RL to rewrite a solver's harness from execution feedback. At test time no weights change; only the code does.

After DAIR.AI's weekly list on Oct 11, Pedro Domingos posted "the model swallows the harness" (~353K views) and Elon Musk replied that Tesla FSD's network likewise ate the C++ code (~246K views).

【Verifiable】

Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2609.35738

On Reasoning Gym (Qwen3.5-4B proposer and solver, SFT on a 35B teacher's revisions, then RL), mean single-step revision score on 21 unseen families rises from 0.32 to 0.62, above the teacher's 0.56; under oracle best-of-eight the teacher still wins. A proposer trained only on HotpotQA transfers to MuSiQue and 2WikiMultihopQA; on MuSiQue, exact match is 0.15 for independent revisions versus 0.27 after ten rounds.

X: Domingos https://x.com/pmddomingos/status/2109420932955804040 , Musk https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2109468545054880123 ; ~150 related posts in 24h, 24-33 per hour over the last five hours.

【Our read】

1. "The model swallows the harness" is half backwards. The harness is not folded into weights; another model rewrites it, and it stays readable, reviewable code. That is the opposite of FSD replacing code with a network, and better for auditing.

2. The novelty is making harness revision a trainable skill that transfers to unseen tasks, on the same line as Sakana's MASS (e/820).

3. Evidence is small: 4B/8B models on puzzles and QA, not frontier coding agents. Whether it holds on long real tool tasks decides if this is a method shift or just a good paper.

Google pauses product vulnerability submissions to its open-source bug bounty after a surge of mostly invalid automated reports

News

【Key points】

On October 1 Google's official bug bounty account, @GoogleVRP, said it is temporarily no longer accepting product vulnerability submissions to its Open Source Software Vulnerability Reward Program (OSS VRP), which covers Google-maintained projects such as Go, Angular and Protocol Buffers. The reason given: "a significant rise in automated submissions, the vast majority of which are not valid." Supply chain reports and reports filed before October 1 are unaffected. Google committed to an update in Q1 2027 but gave no reopening date.

【Verifiable】

The announcement is in the @GoogleVRP post of October 1; the program rules page later carried the same notice, and SecurityWeek, BleepingComputer and The Hacker News covered it from October 5. Google gave no figures and did not explicitly say the submissions were AI-generated, only "automated." Per Google's program page, product vulnerabilities in flagship projects paid $500 to $7,500, and supply chain compromises up to $31,337. According to The Hacker News, Google began requiring stronger proof in some tiers in March 2026, and the Go project added a section on LLM-generated reports to its security policy in early September. According to SecurityWeek, Google changed Chrome and Android rewards in May, and HackerOne's Internet Bug Bounty paused new submissions in March.

【Our read】

The point is not that one bounty program paused, but that AI has made vulnerability reports cheap enough to break bounty economics: filing costs almost nothing, while verifying still costs maintainer time, and rewards encourage volume. Keeping supply chain reports open suggests the flood is in the category tools can guess at in bulk. Watch whether programs move to proof machines cannot easily fake, such as working reproductions or merged patches, and whether vendors' own scanners cut false positives. Until then, the gap between finding bugs at scale and fixing them falls on maintainers.
